the people tuning in right now. they're seeing a very different race and different paul ryan and romney than we have been watching for the entire past few months. if you just tuned in now, i think you might think mitt romney was a centrist which he has not been for the past year or so. if you are just tuning in, you might think paul ryan had pretty blue eyes and a set of solutions to aur. i don't know how biden is going to handle this. he's such a straight shooter, but maybe a straight shooter from the hip if i can mix metaphors. i'm not sure if he'll get frustrated, if he'll get angry, if he will just laugh it off, if he will come off as condescending. it will be interesting to see. >> right. clarence, "the washington post" spoke to republican voters in ohio, one of whom said of paul ryan's chances against joe biden, and i'm quoting the person, i think ryan is going to eat him alive. another said, he's dynamic, he knows his facts. do you think this is going to be a washout and that mr. ryan is literally going to trounce biden? >> i was pretty amused by that story, martin, because we were at

speech right before the election? >> yes. mitt romney has been aggressively pursuing the foreign policy area because he thinks the president is vulnerable. yes, the president did manage to kill osama bin laden on his watch, but in certain other areas the romney folks if you listen to all of the national security advisers, the foreign policy advisers, they think the president is very vulnerable, especially the notion of leading from behind. they say a romney administration would not lead from behind but rather lead from out front, and they're going to go after the president aggressively. you will see this in the course of romney's address which has been very carefully prepared and carefully written and you certain saw to a certain degree when romney did his overseas trip over the summer when he went to britain and then to england and then israel and then he went to poland and the series of speeches he delivered were pretty tough on the president even though he was reluctant to overly criticize the president overseas. the message certainly came through and certainly came through in the in

weapon anywhere in the world. >> jonathan, i think you're exactly right. the basic problem that romney runs up against here is the same problem with domestic policy whshgs it comes to economic policy. he really at a substantive level doesn't have much to say because the campaign strategy has basically been whether it's the economy or foreign policy, take any given issue and say obama has failed, and everything is terrible. here's some statistics and make a vague and broad promise of leadership, new leadership, bold leer looedship, a bold strategy on romney's part that will be different. you try to capitalize on basic frustration and anxiety with how they feel about the country. let me give a specific example of this from the speech today. romney talked about the need for new leadership and bold leadership to bring a resolution to the israel/palestine situation. when the cameras were not rolling a few months ago when millions weren't listening or watching, romney had a different take on the exact same subject. i'd like to play that right now. >> these are problems that are very hard to

't mean you should vote for romney. to me that is so obvious right? but apparently it's not obvious to people at home. that's why president obama has to do a much better job at these debates because they aren't theoretical. they're not patty cakes. it causes people to vote for the other guy. nonetheless, don't panic average all the polls that obama is up 48-47%. it's not a big lead but it's still a lead. and the swing states. well, if obama has the lead of over 2.5 percentage points that means its still comfortably in his category. you have wisconsin, nevada iowa and ohio. if he wins those those are comfortable leads for the moment being in those states, then he gets 290 electoral votes. he needs 270 and he wins comfortably. will he get those swing states? well, "huffington post"," their pollster did an analyst according to the polls he still has a 91% chance of winning in ohio and 71% chance in winning in colorado. those are incredible good numbers. the presidential pick, these are the guys who are in the market who is been to win this is people voting with their money. president o

said we were dealing now more than ever for gas and oil and he's right. then mr. romney came back with our bottle saying, mr. president, are drilling more for gas and oil, but it's not due to your policy. then he went on to say that because we are not drilling on federal and. why the president did not jump on that, i don't know. all the president would have to have said, was, mr. romney, do you think the american public would condone drilling in yellowstone? do you think the american public would condone drilling in yosemite? i just sat back from fly-fishing in montana and i was on federal land fly-fishing. i was on federal land where nothing is going on and i enjoyed that. i don't want to be fly-fishing next to an oil well or fracking liquid that is stored in pits that is poisonous. i just don't understand mr. romney saying we should be drilling like crazy on federal land. that just goes to show how he is uneducated about the circle of life in the natural environments. that's all i have to say. host: thanks for the call. guest: fracking and coal are major issues. the romney campa

. we're just now seeing how much the romney campaign is doing in some of these states. you're right, it absolutely could turn around. until we see romney leading in a lot of these averages in a lot of these states the president still has the edge. jon: one of the questions is about voter enthusiasm. one poll says republican enthusiasm, especially post-debate, is much higher than it is among democrats. if this is going to be a base election where turning out your base is critically important that could be huge for the gop. >> no question about that. in the last month or so, we've seen democrats have had the edge in terms of enthusiasm. part of that was a as a result of the democratic convention which seemed to have better sort of reaction than the republican convention but the debate did seem to change that. democrats will tell you that, they may have gotten complacent and the president's debate performance maybe helped them out of that. jon: curious, i know you're there, waiting for mitt romney to speak in lexington, curious that foreign policy is going to be the focus. most america

%. but a closer look shows a bounce for mitt romney right after last week's debate. he picked up two points, the president lost three. so let's check in with paul steinhauser, cnn's political editor, live in washington. earlier i said this was a brand new poll. it is not a brand new poll but we are now dissecting the numbers, is that right? >> yeah. the tracking poll came out on sunday but what they did -- go back to that screen, they broke it down. it's a seven-day tracking poll. on the left, those are the numbers prior to the debate. the 50 to 45%. that's the president -- >> there they are. >> that's the president with a five-point advantage within the sampling era three days leading up to the right. the right, three days after the debate. this is among registered voters, gallup's tracking poll, polls registered voters. a lot of the other polls move to a smaller, more narrow likely voter model. couple things about the numbers, the national polls were tightening up even before the first presidential debate so i guess this extenuates that trend. we're going to see a lot more polling over th
